Gold medal in debut BMX freestyle event 'still sinking in' for Australia's Martin
- Title: Gold medal in debut BMX freestyle event 'still sinking in' for Australia's Martin
- Date: 2nd August 2021
- Summary: JOURNALIST ASKING QUESTION (SOUNDBITE) (English) AUSTRALIAN CHEF DE MISSION, IAN CHESTERMAN, SAYING: "One of our real highlights yesterday was seeing Logan in action, it really was an extraordinary performance. Not too many athletes get the luxury of getting to their final run and knowing that they can just enjoy it because the gold medal is already wrapped up. It was performance under pressure, and he did brilliantly and I think it was so exciting for the Olympic movement to have BMX freestyle on the program, so my congratulations to Logan on his extraordinary record, and didn't it just say, 'this sport's here to stay.'" - Story Text:Australia's Logan Martin said on Monday (August 2) his victory at the Men's BMX Freestyle was "still sinking in" and hoped his win will "get more eyes" on the sport back home after he secured gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
The 27-year-old world champion performed two-minute runs of tricks scoring top marks at the Olympics' first-ever BMX competition. Venezuela's Daniel Dhers took silver and Great Britain's Declan Brooks followed with bronze.
"I wanted to showcase this sport, I wanted to essentially get more eyes on the sport, and for people to realise that it is a professional sport. We are professional athletes and in the past, it hasn't been looked upon as that, but the past few years it has progressed that way. So to get more kids into the sport. I know for the females it is a very new sport for them, so to get more girls on bikes as well, to get more people around BMX, get people outside, I think it's an awesome move for the Olympics," Martin told reporters.
Martin built a skatepark in his backyard to train for the Olympics, an investment he said has paid off.
