- Story Text: Schools reopened for all classes in India's northern Punjab state and for only higher classes in other neighbouring states on Monday (August 02) after being shut due to the pandemic.
India in March, last year had ordered the closure of schools, colleges, and other educational institutions, and pushed for classes to move online, to curb the spread of the deadly virus.
But with COVID-19 cases declining many schools had reopened schools for higher classes earlier, as part of unlocking process.
In northern Punjab state classes began for all students as they arrived in schools after attending online classes from home for over an year.
Students in Amritsar and Ludhiana cities of Punjab were asked to sanitise their hands, wear mask and follow distancing norms to avoid getting infected with the virus. Their body temperatures were also measured before allowing them to enter school.
"It has been a year since our schools had closed due to coronavirus pandemic. Students will get (proper) education and they can play as well. This will make the children happy," said a student Manish.
Classes for 9th to 12 standard were also being held in schools in India's northern Dehradun city.
India reported 40,134 new cases of the coronavirus in the last 24 hours, a government statement said on Monday.
Deaths rose by 422 in the same period, according to the federal health ministry. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
