- Story Text: Mexican authorities announced on Monday (August 2) a contest to develop a project that will preserve the Pyramid of the Feathered Serpent located in Teotihuacan.
The International Feathered Serpent Contest was launched by the Mexican History and Anthropology Institution.
The project's objective is to develop a roof structure that will guarantee the pyramid's conservation and will stabilize the monument.
"According to the experts, the accumulated deterioration and acceleration of climate change require us to take more drastic measures", said the general director of the Mexican Institution of History and Anthropology, Diego Prieto Hernandez.
The Feathered Serpent Temple was restored for the first time in 1921 by the archeologist Manuel Gamio.
Dubbed "The Place Where Men Become Gods" by the ancient Aztecs who believed it was a divine site, Teotihuacan reached its peak between 250 and 500 CE when it had a population close to 150,000 residents to become the sixth-largest city in the world after Constantinople and Alexandria.
