- Story Text:Hikers trekked up a Bosnian mountain in the early hours of Monday (August 9), hoping the isolation and low light pollution would give them a glimpse of the Perseid meteor shower.
The Perseid meteors are debris left behind by the Swift-Tuttle comet, according to NASA, and become visible as shooting stars as the Earth passes close to the path of the comet.
Afan Abazovic, who guided the hikers, said hikes to see the Perseids take place every year on different mountains in Bosnia.
As the hikers reached the summit, they set up tents and hammocks and lay down in the grass to watch the night sky.
Hikers said they were impressed by the astronomical display.
The Perseid meteor shower, one of the biggest of the year, reaches its peak in mid-August and is best seen from the northern hemisphere, NASA said on its website.
