- Story Text: Days before the U.N. panel on climate change sounded a dire warning on Monday (August 9), victims of the recent deadly floods in western Germany feared there was more to come, saying "this is just the beginning."
In its report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said the world was dangerously close to runaway warming - and that humans are "unequivocally" to blame.
Already, greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere are high enough to guarantee climate disruption for decades if not centuries, scientists warned in the report.
"I firmly believe that there is more to come in the future," said Karl Hoebel from Erftstadt whose town was devastated by last month's floods.
"You don't just have to look at this region but elsewhere across the world and what's happening there with fires, heat waves and so on, I do believe that we have only just seen the beginning."
Erftstadt resident Cornelia Barthel said she was "one hundred percent convinced" that comparable flooding will happen again.
Shaking her head, she added "that's the reason why we don't want to live in our apartment anymore."
More than 170 people died in last month's flooding, Germany's worst natural disaster in more than half a century.
