- Story Text: The Grand World of Ice and Snow festival kicked off on Thursday (January 5) in Harbin, one of the coldest cities in China, with a spectacular display of ice sculptures.
This year's festival, themed "Pearl on the Crown of Ice and Snow - Harbin" and organised by China National Tourism Administration and local governments, runs till mid-February and is expected to attract tourists from China and around the world.
Visitors flocked to the city to enjoy snow sculptures, ice slides and watch a swimming competition.
A 22-year- old university student, Zhou Fanlu, was visiting the festival for the first time and was stunned by the views at night.
"We came into Ice and Snow World at about 4.00 pm when it was still day time with the sun. Compared with day, the night view is indeed better. When the lights are on, it is so beautiful. Photos are also really amazing. After travelling around, I think it's so wonderful and it's difficult to build these ice sculptures. We are also talking about how they are made. They are so beautiful," she said.
You Junlin, also from northeastern China, said the freezing temperature was almost same as in his hometown but he was still captivated by the amazing ice sculptures.
"You must come to Ice and Snow World if you come to Harbin in winter. These ice sculptures shocked me. They look so real and they are really big. I am happy to be here," he said.
Organisers say the festival, which is open for 60 days and boasts a variety of snow and ice-related activities, draws several million tourists from across the country and internationally each year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
