- Story Text: The exiled Tibetan Women's Association held a demonstration in India's northern hill town of Dharamsala on International Prisoner's Justice Day and appealed for the release and information on the whereabouts of the 11th Panchen Lama and other prisoners.
'Prisoner's Justice Day' is observed on August 10 every year in support of prisoners' rights and to remember all the people who died of unnatural deaths in confinement.
On Tuesday (August 10), demonstrators took to the streets of the city chanting prayers and carrying posters of the Panchen Lama, asking for his whereabouts and release.
Gedhun Choekyi Nyima - anointed Panchen Lama by Tibet's current spiritual leader, the 14th Dalai Lama - 'disappeared' on May 17, 1995, at the age of six. The same year, China went on to appoint Gyaltsen Norbu as its own Panchen Lama.
China said in 2015 that Gendun Choekyi Nyima was "living a normal life" and did not want to be disturbed.
According to the Tibetan tradition, Panchen Lama and Dalai Lama, identify each other to succeed their predecessors. However, exiled Tibetans claim that the Panchen Lama was taken into custody by China, to meddle in the procedure.
Chinese troops marched into Tibet in 1950. Activists say China has violently tried to stamp out religious freedom and culture in Tibet. China rejects the criticism, saying its rule has ended serfdom and brought development to a backward region. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
