- Story Text:Shopping malls in Indonesia's capital were slowly reopened this week, allowing up to 25 percent of vaccinated people, excluding children and the elderly, to enter.
Shoppers are required to scan the QR code on a health monitoring app which determines if the individual has received at least one shot of vaccine. Only once the user has received a 'green tick', can they enter the store.
"This is a positive measure for the shopping mall. So that visitors can be assured that everyone who enter the mall has been scanned and considered (a) safe and healthy (individual)," said Eka Dewanto, the general manager of Pondok Indah Mall in north Jakarta.
Indonesian authorities restricted mobility to stem the spread of the highly transmissible Delta variant of the coronavirus on populous Java and Bali in early July, and since extended them to other areas with high infection rates.
People's vaccination status will determine which health protocols they must adhere to in sectors like tourism and education, whether they have to wear masks or not, said health minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said on Monday (August 9).
Indonesia is battling one of the worst outbreak in Asia fuelled by the Delta variant. On Friday (August 13) the country has recorded over 3.8 million cases and more than 115,000 deaths.
