- Story Text: Hundreds of motorcycle and delivery riders queued at a drive-in vaccination site in Manila on Friday (August 13) amid a growing number of coronavirus cases in the Philippine capital.
About 3,700 motorists, mostly from the transportation and delivery sectors, registered for drive-in vaccinations at a shopping mall's parking lot which had been turned into a makeshift vaccination site.
Drive-in vaccinations for motorists were initiated to help protect the transportation sector amid a rise in coronavirus cases, exacerbated by the Delta variant, that has prompted a two-week lockdown in the greater Manila area.
"I hope this will help us with our lives. We haven't been able to move freely in so long, so this vaccination is a blessing and I'm thankful for it," said 62-year-old trishaw driver Rudy Santos.
The Philippines' health ministry recorded 13,177 new coronavirus infections on Friday, the second-highest daily increase in cases since the start of the pandemic. In a bulletin, the ministry also said there were 299 fatalities on Friday, the highest in four months.
