- Story Text: Thousands of farmers drove a convoy of tractors festooned with brightly coloured flags in northern Haryana state to protest the controversial agricultural laws on the occasion of Independence Day on Sunday (August 15).
A sea of protesting farmers bearing the flags of India and farm unions, marched on tractors and motorbikes to express their anger against the apathy of the federal government towards the growers, on the 75th year of India's independence.
"We will keep protesting and camp on the outskirts of Delhi until the laws are repealed, even if it takes two more years," said Kaabil Singh, a protesting farmer in Punjab's Attari town.
Thousands of farmers are camped out on New Delhi's outskirts for over seven months despite a great risk of COVID-19 infection to themselves, urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government to repeal the farm laws, which they say threaten their livelihoods.
Modi's government says the farm laws introduced in September 2020 will help boost growers' incomes, and the government was willing to talk to the farmers.
Farmers, however, say the new laws favor large private retailers by freeing them to buy farm goods outside government-regulated wholesale grain markets. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
