- Story Text: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spelled out a number of climate action goals while addressing the nation on Sunday (August 15) - the 75th Independence Day.
India announced becoming self-reliant in its energy requirement before the 100th Independence Day, insisting on promotion of gas-based economy, a CNG-PNG network across the country among other things.
India aims to produce 450 GW renewable energy by 2030, a target that Modi said was pacing ahead of its schedule.
Modi also announced a detailed plan on National Hydrogen Mission on promoting the research and usage of green Hydrogen, calling it "an inspiration for the world towards clean energy transition."
"Our efforts are also giving an assurance to the world on the practicality of renewable energy," said Modi.
India had earlier hinted on shifting towards green Hydrogen to control emissions. It can also be used as a "decarbonising agent" for industries like chemicals, metals, fertilisers, transport, heat and power.
As a byproduct, Hydrogen consumption in the form of a fuel only produces water and gives three time more energy than the same amount of gasoline.
Modi also remembered those killed during the deadly second wave of COVID-19 pandemic.
"Despite all the efforts, we could not save a lot of people because of coronavirus. This unbearable pain will always remain with us," Modi said.
India achieved its independence from the colonial British rule on August 15, 1947, ending more than 200 years of rule. But celebrations to mark independence are tinged with sadness because they also recall the bloody partition from Pakistan in which hundreds of thousands died. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
