- Story Text:The chairman of the Iranian Parliament's Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, said on Thursday (January 5) finding a solution to end the Syrian war would not be easy.
Peace talks aimed at resolving the five-year conflict are set to take place later this month in the Kazakh capital of Astana.
"Naturally, in a complicated negotiation such as finding a diplomatic solution to the prolonged Syrian crisis, there is no unanimous agreement, which is very natural. Yet I believe, there isn't a clear image of the outcome of Astana talks. The possible disputes and their solutions won't be disclosed until the (Astana) talks are held," Boroujerdi told a news conference in Damascus.
He made the comments after meeting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem and Syrian Parliament Speaker, Hadya Abbas.
Iran is one of Assad's main allies assisting in the conflict against armed rebel groups.
Turkey and Russia brokered the December 30 cessation of hostilities which has been backed by the United Nations.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu called on Iran to exert pressure on Shi'ite-backed militias and the Syrian government to stop violating a ceasefire in Syria, warning it was putting the planned peace talks in peril. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
