Shi'ite Muslims in the Afghan capital of Kabul said they were free to commemorate the holiest day of their religious calendar on Thursday (August 19), days after the Taliban, Sunni hardliners, took control.
Men gathered in crowds, hitting their backs and bleeding to mark Ashura on the 10th day of the month of Muharram and remember the martyrdom of Hussein, one of the grandsons of the Prophet Mohammad.
It comes as flag-waving protesters took to the streets of more Afghan cities on Thursday as popular opposition to the Taliban spread, and a witness said several people were killed when the militants fired on a crowd in Asadabad in the east. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
