- Story Text: The Museum of Ice Cream opened its first international outlet in Singapore on Thursday (August 19), providing some sweet respite for residents as the country eased some coronavirus restrictions.
Visitors had to book a time in advance to ensure social distancing requirements were met in the museum. The 60,000 square foot facility follows strict coronavirus guidelines set out by the government which includes mandatory check-ins and showing of vaccination certificates or negative COVID-19 tests for all visitors.
Many were excited by the prospect of free-flow ice cream and the interactive exhibits they can experience with tickets that cost from 38 Singapore dollars ($28).
"We had a lot of fun in the bouncy castle, we were wearing our masks, but bouncing off the calories we're using with the ice cream," said health coach Trudy Sweeney while biting into a red bean ice cream on a stick - one of the local flavours available in the Singapore museum.
"It's definitely a good break from the pandemic," said her friend and fellow health coach Mitch Tugade. "It's really a good place to be - it's happy and you forget about what's happening outside when you're here."
Head of Asia Pacific at Museum of Ice Cream Singapore, Pirakash T, said part of the museum's appeal is how it makes people happy.
"It also helps the creative side of your brain, helps you forget about things. So I definitely do think that it is beneficial, allows you to take a break from things that are happening outside, and is definitely good for your mental health as well."
The Museum of Ice Cream said it plans to expand into more international locations soon. It will open another location in Austin, U.S. on Saturday (August 21) and currently has a permanent location in New York, which is popular with influencers and frequently attracts A-list celebrities.
