- Story Text: Thousands of Afghans waited in the heat outside Kabul airport on Wednesday (August 25), desperate to get on a flight to leave the country.
Shoaib, an Afghan citizen who had previously worked with foreign forces, told Reuters he wanted to leave Afghanistan and go to the country he had worked for.
He did not specify his job or which country he had worked for.
"I had been worked with a foreign company, I come here to see the situation, but I see that our brothers, as you see that all people of Kabul came here, I think those who have documents come including those who have no documents, so my dear brother they wrote in English and in Dari that the gate is closed, but we don't know where to go and where to refer and ask if our situation could be solve or not," Shoaib said.
The Taliban have told Germany that Afghans with legal documents will be able to travel on commercial flights beyond the Aug. 31 cut-off date after which evacuations from Kabul airport will no longer be allowed, a senior German diplomat said on Wednesday.
Western nations rushed to evacuate people on Wednesday as fears grew that many could be left behind to an uncertain fate under the country's new Taliban rulers.
In one of the biggest such airlifts ever, the United States and its allies have evacuated more than 70,000 people, including their citizens, NATO personnel and Afghans at risk, since Aug. 14, the day before the Taliban swept into the capital Kabul to bring to an end the 20-year foreign military presence.
