- Story Text: Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim arrived in Erbil early on Sunday (January 8) after meeting with the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in Baghdad.
Yildirim was met at the airport by the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan regional Government, Nechirvan Barzani.
Tensions rose between Iraq and Turkey in October over the continued presence of Turkish forces in Bashiqa and elsewhere in northern Iraq, with each government summoning the other's ambassador just as the U.S.-backed campaign to drive the Islamic State militant group out of Mosul was set to begin.
Abadi said on Saturday (January 7) an agreement had been reached with Turkey over an Iraqi demand that Turkish forces withdraw from a town near Mosul in the north of the country.
However, a joint communique issued after Abadi met Yildirim did not refer to any such deal, but said both sides stressed that Bashiqa was an Iraqi camp. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
