- Story Text: Indian Foreign Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said on Thursday (August 26) that the country has evacuated several Indian and Afghan citizens and will bring everybody back from the trouble-torn land as soon as possible.
"We have brought back most of the Indians, but not all of them, there is still a few out there. Some of them could not make it for the flight yesterday. But definitely, we will try and bring out everybody," said Jaishankar.
"We have also brought out some Afghan citizens, who wanted to come to India at this point of time," Jaishankar added.
The dreaded militant outfit Taliban entered Kabul on August 15 after rapidly taking over much of the country, prompting chaotic scenes at the airport as crowds scrambled to escape.
Jaishankar briefed the all-party panel over the present situation in Afghanistan on Thursday, after which he spoke about the evacuation process.
The United States and allies urged people to move away from Kabul airport on Thursday, citing the threat of an attack by Islamic State (IS) militants as Western troops hurry to evacuate as many people as possible before an Aug. 31 deadline.
"The government is very-very strongly committed to ensuring the full evacuation as soon as possible and also seeing that in terms of any international decisions which are made, any gatherings which are there that our diplomacy, our roles, our interests are recognized," said Jaishankar.
During their 1996-2001 rule, also guided by Islamic law, or shariah, the Taliban stopped women from working and administered punishments including public stoning. Girls were not allowed to go to school and women had to wear all-enveloping 'burqas' to go out. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
