- Story Text: Spanish coast guards transported around 50 migrants rescued in the Atlantic Ocean to the port of Arguineguin on the island of Gran Canaria on Thursday (August 26).
One migrant was taken to a local hospital in a helicopter in serious conditions.
Emergency staff attended dozens lying on the ground visible exhausted.
The dinghy which was intercepted 6 miles south of the island of Gran Canaria was carrying babies among men and women.
So far this year more than 8272 migrants have made the dangerous crossing from the West Africa coast to the Canaries archipelago, over twice as many as in the same period in 2020, which itself saw an eightfold increase from 2019.
