- Story Text: A discreet police presence outside a social housing estate near Paris was the only indication of the presence of Afghan families recently arrived from Kabul in evacuations by French authorities.
Western nations are scrambling to evacuate people from Afghanistan but acknowledged that many Afghans who helped during two decades of war would be left behind to face an uncertain fate under the Taliban when foreign troops leave next week.
Shakiba Dawod, a comedian who arrived in France two years ago, came with clothes and food supplies, trying to get access to the social estate where her mother, three brothers and younger sister were staying, freshly arrived from Kabul. She said her family struggled for four days to get through the chaos surrounding the airport before their evacuation.
French authorities, who said they have evacuated over 2000 Afghans since the Taliban took over the capital, have imposed a ten day lockdown to prevent any COVID-19 infections.
But Dawod said her family needed supplies and an internet connection in order to communicate with the outside world.
Twenty-two year old Khaled Khan arrived in France three years ago after leaving Afghanistan. He has come to give a few clothes, some food and a pan to cook in for a friend of his who landed on Tuesday (August 24). But he and his friend were denied access too.
France on Thursday (August 26) said they would no longer be able to evacuate people from Afghanistan from Friday evening onwards.
The French foreign ministry said that, as of Wednesday evening, more than 100 French nationals and more than 2,000 Afghans had reached French soil after being evacuated from Kabul airport.
