- Summary: ROME, ITALY (AUGUST 27, 2021) (REUTERS) ITALIAN FOREIGN MINSTER LUIGI DI MAIO AND RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTER SERGEI LAVROV ARRIVING FOR NEWS CONFERENCE (SOUNDBITE) (Italian) ITALIAN FOREIGN MINISTER LUIGI DI MAIO SAYING: "Firstly I would like to express the strong Italian condemnation for the terrorist attacks that have occurred in the last hours which have hit various areas of Kabul and in particular the airport where also our personnel were busy in the complex duty of evacuation. I wish to renew, in the name of the Italian government, our condolence to the Afghan civilians and the Marines, who were victims of this attack. In a context that cannot give us anything but a profound concern, we are convinced that Moscow is a fundamental player in dealing with the current crisis and to achieve a unified international approach in future. Only a global, consistent, shared action, can be efficient in dealing with this new authority in Kabul. In the next hours, with the completion of the air lift and the evacuation operation, the first emergency phase will be completed. We have to now plan the second phase, looking further ahead than August 31, to put in place an operation in the short to mid term an organised, structured and strategic approach." CUTAWAY (SOUNDBITE) (Italian) ITALIAN FOREIGN MINISTER LUIGI DI MAIO SAYING: "Italy, as President of G20, is organising an ad hoc summit in order to have some more in-depth discussions on Afghanistan and to widen the international support to an international approach."
