- Story Text: Differently-abled homeless in India's eastern Bhubaneswar city have found means to earn a livelihood and become self-reliant after being rehabilitated.
A non-profit organisation, Odisha Patita Udhar Samiti is helping the destitute to polish their skills and earn income by indulging in the production of incense sticks, brooms, decoration pieces among other items.
"In order to have a better direction, in order to have a purpose in life we thought of enhancing the skills that they possess so that as a… like we can go ahead and they can earn a better-dignified life," said a volunteer, Odisha Patita Udhar Samiti, Ritesh.
Unemployment has been a big reason for many people to turn towards begging as a way to earn a livelihood. Those destitute who are uneducated are mostly abandoned or are an orphan.
While India's economy may be growing faster than ever, so are income inequalities. It still has no comprehensive welfare system to keep millions of people out of desperate poverty. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
