- Story Text: French President, Emmanuel Macron, arrived in Erbil early on Sunday morning (August 29), where he was met by the president of the Kurdistan region of Iraq, Nechirvan Barzani.
Macron arrived in Erbil from Baghdad where he attended a regional summit designed to get Iraq's neighbours to talk to each other instead of settling scores on Iraqi territory.
Relationships within the region are strained chiefly by hostility between Iran on one side and the United States and its Arab Gulf allies on the other.
Organisers said they did not expect any diplomatic breakthroughs at the summit.
Macron's trip to Iraq over two days also aims to support the regional dialogue, meet Iraqi political leaders and visit French special forces involved in the ongoing fight against Islamic State insurgents.
On Sunday morning, Macron will travel to Mosul where his visits include Mosul university, Christian communities as well as al-Nouri mosque currently under restoration with the support of UNESCO and UAE.
In 2014, when Islamic State captured vast areas of Iraq and imposed its own rule, many cities, towns and villages - including Mosul, the capital of Islamic State's self-proclaimed caliphate - were left in ruins.
Iraqi forces regained full control of Mosul in July 2017.
