- Story Text:Rolling Stones fans on London's iconic Carnaby Street on Wednesday (August 25) said the death of drummer Charlie Watts was a huge loss to the music industry and to Britain.
Watts, widely regarded as one of the coolest men in rock, a jazz enthusiast and a snappy dresser, died on Tuesday (August 24) just three weeks after pulling out of the band's upcoming U.S. tour for health reasons.
He was 80 years old.
The Rolling Stones merchandise store on Carnaby Street closed its doors on Wednesday, as a mark of respect to the legendary musician.
Outside the store, fan and music journalist Kevin Hughes described Watts as a true gentleman and the engine of the Rolling Stones.
Passerby Karen Richards said her 80-year-old mother went to school with Watts and she grew up listening to the Rolling Stones.
Devastated was how Rolling Stones fan Jim McCarthy said he felt upon hearing the news of Watts' death.
Watts played drums on all of the group's 30 albums and on every tour. No cause of death was given for his passing, but the announcement followed an Aug. 4 statement by the band that the drummer was pulling out of its rescheduled No Filter U.S. tour because he needed time to recuperate after an unspecified emergency medical procedure. Bandmates had expected Watts to rejoin the band.
