- Story Text: Seated in Gaza's new mobile cinema, a group of young Palestinians are munching popcorn while enjoying a cartoon, a rare experience for the children in the enclave.
Equipped with solar panels, a chairlift for the mobility impaired and with a capacity for over 60 people, the 'Cinema Bus' recently took the the roads in Gaza to revive the spirit of the big screen among its young population.
While cinemas flourished in Gaza in the 1950s, they were torched in 1987 when the first Palestinian uprising errupted.
They were restored and reopened afterwards, but only to be set on fire again a few years later, in 1996, amid a new wave of political tension.
Gaza residents, with little opportunities to leave the enclave, have since had to enjoy films from home.
"This is the first time I watch a movie in such a cinema, a movie about love and caring about oneself," 13-year-old Gaza resident, Jaser Hasoneh said, after attending a packed outdoor screening in Gaza city.
To reach larger audiences, the 'Cinema Bus' contains the necessary equipment to offer outdoors screening to up to 500 people.
The initiative, funded by the European Union and launched by the local 'Save Youth Future society', offers a selection of films meant to promote the values of peace, tolerance and non-violence, according to project coordinator Mahmoud al-Hebrbawi.
