- Story Text: Large swathes of Germany were blanketed with snow on Sunday (January 8), as temperatures plummeted across Europe.
In Beuerberg near Munich, crowds of people took to the slopes for a spot of skiing.
Children in bright snow suits practised on the gentle slope, accessed via a 300 metre high ski lift.
"We wait all through the autumn for the snow to finally arrive. It's nice that it's come just before the end of the holidays," ski lift operator Sabine Vieweg said.
"It's just perfect here. It's not far from Munich, it's great. We don't necessarily have to go to Austria!" said Simone Lichte as she waited for the lift.
For those who didn't make it to the ski slopes, a different winter sport was on offer in Munich.
In the gardens of the Nymphenburg Palace, the frozen ground was turned into several curling rinks.
"It's nice when the snow comes down to Munich from the mountains. Maybe we have some difficulties driving, but it's fun," local resident Heinz Schneider said.
But not everyone was pleased to be out and about in the cold.
"I don't like winter at all, but you have to get some fresh air at some point in the day for your circulation and for your immune system. But I could do without winter. I could do without curling too because I can't do it! But my family can," said Eva Baeumel as she watched her family play.
At the other end of the country, capital Berlin also saw several inches of snow. Families out for a Sunday stroll in the city's Tiergarten park were treated to a winter wonderland of frosty leaves and powdery snow. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
