- Story Text: Heavy snow and strong winds hit Romania on Sunday (January 8) as freezing temperatures and worsening conditions forced the closure of roads and railways and left dozens of villages without power, local media said.
Four people have died in the extreme weather conditions, including one on Sunday, local TV reports said.
In the capital Bucharest 600 homeless people are already in shelters to protect them from the cold. The city's mayor, Gabriela Firea, helped serve hot food and drink to homeless people living around the railway station who are determined to remain.
All ports on the Black Sea have been closed and in Constanta, a coastal town 225km from Bucharest, 27 villages remained without electricity. School children have been told to stay at home until at least Wednesday (January 10), local media added.
Temperatures are forecast to plunge to minus 29 degrees in Romania's east and south-east, with winds reaching 80 km/h expected over the next few days. Authorities have warned people not to undertake non-urgent travel. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
