- Story Text: A truck driven by a Palestinian rammed into pedestrians on a popular promenade in Jerusalem on Sunday (January 8) killing four people, in a deliberate attack, Israel police said, the most serious such incident in months.
Police said the dead, three women and one man, were all in their twenties.
At least 13 people were wounded and taken to several hospitals across Jerusalem.
An Israeli bus driver who witnessed the incident said on the radio the truck ploughed into a group of soldiers, and that they fired on the driver, who reversed direction and ran over them again.
Police Chief Roni Alsheich said the driver was a Palestinian from East Jerusalem. He said the man may have been inspired by the attacker in Berlin who killed 12 people last month by ploughing a truck into a Christmas market.
Rescue workers said about 15 wounded people were strewn on the street at the Armon Hanatziv promenade overlooking the walled Old City of Jerusalem. They were taken to several hospitals across Jerusalem.
A wave of Palestinian street attacks, including vehicle rammings, has largely slowed but not stopped completely since it began in October 2015.
At least 231 Palestinians have been killed in violence in Israel, the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip since October 2015. Israel says at least 157 of them were assailants in lone attacks often targeting security forces and using rudimentary weapons including kitchen knives. Others died during clashes and protests.
The street assaults killed at least 37 Israelis and two visiting Americans over the same period.
Israel says one of the main causes of the violence has been incitement by the Palestinian leadership, with young men encouraged to attack Israeli soldiers and civilians.
Palestinian leaders say assailants have acted out of desperation, frustrated by the Israeli occupation of land Palestinians want for their own state. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
