- Story Text: Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, who is popularly known as Kate, celebrates her 35th birthday on Monday (January 09).
It has been a busy twelve months for the wife of the future British king Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and their children, Prince George and princess Charlotte.
In April they had dinner with US President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle at Kensington Palace in London.
The same month saw them visit the tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, hiking in the mountains and trying their hand at archery.
The same South Asian tour saw Kate seated with her husband where his mother Princess Diana was famously photographed alone, at the Taj Mahal.
William and Kate sat side by side on the same bench where his late mother was photographed on a solitary visit in 1992.
The final stop at the Taj Mahal was an emotional one for William, who was 15 when Diana died in a car crash in 1997.
Diana's solo visit to the 17th-century mausoleum - built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favourite wife - came to symbolise her unhappy marriage to Prince Charles. The couple separated months later.
An official visit to Canada in September saw Prince George making headlines when, holding his father's hand, he ignored Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as he squatted down to the three year old's level to offer a 'high-five'.
In October Kate performed her first official royal engagement abroad without husband Prince William, visiting The Hague's Mauritshuis museum, where the British Royal Collection loaned some of its works by Dutch masters including Vermeer.
She also made a courtesy call to King Willem-Alexander at his residence Villa Eikenhorst and a stop in Rotterdam.
She maintained her close links with mental health charities, telling finalists at the Place2Be Wellbeing in Schools awards, they are an 'inspiration'.
On Christmas day Kate was seen attending church in Berkshire, without the queen, who missed her traditional Christmas service for the first time in nearly 30 years due to a heavy cold. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
