So it's really nice, there are a lot of people in there who write beautifully about movies and who I've been reading for many years. So it's nice to be in this room and to know that at least a majority of them appreciated the job I did in this movies, if not all of them." But the truth is, it's really fun because you get to go to events like this and you see actors who you admire, who you might not actually know or ever cross paths with otherwise and they kind of have to be nice to you for that evening. And you get to hang out with them - so I've got nothing to complain about." ACTRESS MICHELLE WILLIAMS SPEAKING TO REPORTER (SOUNDBITE) (English) MICHELLE WILLIAMS, BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS, FOR BOTH "MANCHESTER BY THE SEA" AND "CERTAIN WOMEN," SAYING: "Pretty much all the same, as soon as I know I'm going to do something I just start worrying about it and stressing out about it and thinking about it. And letting it just kind of be like background music in my mind." SMITH-CAMERON LONERGAN SPEAKING TO REPORTER (SOUNDBITE) (English) KENNETH LONERGAN, SCREENWRITER AND DIRECTOR, "MANCHESTER BY THE SEA," SAYING: "I don't know. I know that I got to like it about midway through the second draft of the screenplay. I felt like I was on to something good. And then when the cast came together I knew I was probably in very good shape. And then you just kind of try not to mess up." MAHERSHALA ALI POSING FOR PICTURES ALI SPEAKING TO REPORTER (SOUNDBITE) (English) MAHERSHALA ALI, BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR "MOONLIGHT," SAYING: (ON BEING HONORED) "I embrace it, but I also would say that there is some extraordinary work in our movie by all involved and I feel very touched and blessed that I've been recognized, but I will always recognize and be conscious of the fact that I was in a remarkable ensemble." "MOONLIGHT" DIRECTOR, BARRY JENKINS POSING FOR PICTURES JENKINS SPEAKING TO REPORTER (SOUNDBITE) (English) BARRY JENKINS, "MOONLIGHT," DIRECTOR, SAYING: "When you make a film, when I make a film, I'll say, I expect my mom and my sister and even my pretty closest friends will watch it. But to have this many people, again, the circle is getting farther and farther away from the people who know me - to have total strangers see this film and see themselves in it when they are not from the world of these characters, it just moves me so much." VARIOUS OF ACTRESS ISABELLE HUPPERT SPEAKING TO REPORTERS (SOUNDBITE) (English) ISABELLE HUPPERT, BEST ACTRESS, "ELLE" AND "THINGS TO COME," SAYING: "It's a lot, I feel like I have twins, it's great, it's really great. And still also they are entertaining." - Story Text:The New York Film Critics Circle held its 82nd award ceremony on Tuesday (January 3) with the film "La La Land" picking up the top prize.
The film, about an aspiring actress and jazz musician falling in love while trying to succeed in Los Angeles and stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, was named best film.
"La La Land" was written and directed by Damien Chazelle and is considered an Oscar front-runner.
"I think I was just really lucky that the people who came together to make the movie with me were so gifted and helped kind of elevate it so much. The producers, the crew the cast, Ryan and Emma. I was the luckiest filmmaker in the world," said Chazelle.
"Manchester by the Sea," the poignant and sometimes funny independent movie about a working-class American family dealing with multiple tragedies continues to pick up with actor Casey Affleck being named best actor, Michelle Williams, best supporting actress and a best screenplay honor for Kenneth Lonergan.
"I've been singled out by this organization before in a less flattering way, but you got to take your lumps, you know, if you're going to enjoy the sugar. So it's really nice, there are a lot of people in there who write beautifully about movies and who I've been reading for many years. So it's nice to be in this room and to know that at least a majority of them appreciated the job I did in this movies, if not all of them," said Affleck.
"I know that I got to like it about midway through the second draft of the screenplay. I felt like I was on to something good. And then when the cast came together I knew I was probably in very good shape. And then you just kind of try not to mess up," said Lonergan.
Williams was also recognized for her work supporting role in the drama "Certain Women" and talked about how she prepares for roles.
"As soon as I know I'm going to do something I just start worrying about it and stressing out about it and thinking about it. And letting it just kind of be like background music in my mind."
French actress Isabelle Huppert also received double honors.
"I feel like I have twins, it's great, it's really great. I did the two films in a row, I did 'Elle' first and then I did 'Things to Come' and I think both films speak in a very honest way about a woman's condition in a very contemporary way. And still also they are entertaining."
"Moonlight," which follows a young black man growing to adulthood in a hard-scrabble Miami neighborhood, also picked up multiple trophies. Mahershala Ali snagged the best supporting accolade and Barry Jenkins the best director while James Laxton was named best cinematographer.
"When you make a film, when I make a film, I'll say, I expect my mom and my sister and even my pretty closest friends will watch it. But to have this many people, again, the circle is getting farther and farther away from the people who know me - to have total strangers see this film and see themselves in it when they are not from the world of these characters, it just moves me so much," said Jenkins.
German-Austrian film "Toni Erdmann," was named best foreign language film. Disney's "Zootopia" was named best animated film and documentary director, Ezra Edelman was honored for his film "O.J.: Made in America."
Founded in 1935, the New York Film Critics Circle is among the oldest critics groups in the country. It is made up of members of newspapers, magazines and online publications.
Their awards will be followed on Wednesday by the top film prizes from the National Board of Review.
