- Story Text: Mexico will face the "dynamic" U.S. political situation with negotiation, not conflict or insults, Mexico's new foreign minister Luis Videgaray said on Monday (January 9), adding that Mexican migrants in the United States are not criminals.
"Mexico will act as it has done throughout its diplomatic history, with dignity and intelligence, opening the doors of dialogue and negotiation to defend the interests of Mexico and Mexicans. And how will Mexico negotiate? Mexico is going to negotiate as what it has always been, as what it is and will continue to be, a fully sovereign nation," said Videgaray in a meeting with diplomats.
Luis Videgaray, was appointed foreign minister by Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto last week just four months after he was replaced as finance minister in the wake of a controversial visit by Donald Trump, who will assume office on January 20.
Trump promised during his campaign to revise or cancel the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) between the United States, Mexico and Canada since 1994, order massive deportations of illegal migrants - among them millions of Mexicans - and curb the valuable remittances that they send their relatives in the country.
"But I want to make it clear, and we will make this clear in all our dialogue and in any negotiation. That those millions of Mexicans who have emigrated to look for work are not, as they have been described, criminals but productive people who represent, in most cases, the best of Mexico," added Videgaray.
The Mexican peso has accumulated a drop of almost 14 percent since the November 8 presidential election in the United States.
Trump has criticised U.S. companies who manufacture their products in Mexico and then send them to the United States, as is the case in the automotive industry. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
