- Story Text:Preparations for vote counting were in full swing in Germany's national election on Sunday (September 26) as the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) of Olaf Scholz mounted a strong challenge to the CDU conservatives of Armin Laschet.
In Munich, 7,500 volunteers in a large hall were seen emptying postal votes onto tables where vote counting at nearly 400 tables will begin at 6 p.m. (1600 GMT).
Officials said they expected the counting of Munich's estimated 500,000 postal votes to take around three hours.
According to the last poll published on Sept. 24 by Allensbach, the SPD was at 26% and the CDU at 25%.
Possible kingmakers are the Greens for which the poll showed 16% support.
The business friendly FDP was at 10.5%.
Exit polls will be released at 6 p.m. (1600 GMT).
