Music stars Jennifer Lopez, Shawn Mendes and Billie Eilish were among the headliners at the New York edition of the Global Citizens Festival on Saturday (September 25).
The concert, to 'defend the planet and fight poverty' gathered some 60,000 people in New York's Central Park.
In between songs, singer Lizzo talked to the crowd about climate change: "Unprecedented storms, wildfires in our forest. We are watching the effects of climate change right now in front of our eyes and as an indivual it can be scary."
While Eilish expressed the importance of taking care of the earth: "I find myself completely hopeless most of the time about how much people don't care about the world and where we live and it doesn't make any sense to me."
Audience members had to register on the Global Citizen website and sign petitions or share messages on social networks calling on world leaders to do more for the climate.
Other performers included Coldplay, rapper Meek Mill and Paul Simon who closed the show.
In between performances, speeches were made calling on the international community and large companies to make commitments in fighting climate change.
The Global Citizen Live concert in Central Park aims to push for greater action to combat climate change and urge rich countries to share one billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines with nations most in need. Over a 24-hour period, concerts were held in Paris, New York City, Los Angeles, and other cities.
