Japanese lawmaker Sanae Takaichi is one of four contenders in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) leadership race to succeed prime minister Yoshihide Suga.
Takaichi, a conservative former internal affairs minister and a close associate of former prime minister Shinzo Abe, aims to be the country's first female leader. She will go up against former foreign minister Fumio Kishida, among others, at the polls on Wednesday (September 29).
Takaichi launched her challenge on policies to strengthen security and help boost the COVID-19-battered economy. She said she would shelve the goal of hitting a primary budget balance until the Bank of Japan's 2% inflation target was met. She coined her policies "Sanaenomics", a term taken from her first name, similar to how Abe used to refer to his economic policies as "Abenomics."
The winner of the ruling party election is all but assured to be Japan's next prime minister.
