- Story Text: Haitians marched in the capital of Port-au-Prince on Sunday (September 26) to protest against deportations of Haitian migrants by the United States.
Last week an impromptu border camp that roiled the U.S. government was cleared of thousands of Haitian migrants, with many expelled on deportation flights or returned to Mexico.
U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas reported that nearly 30,000 migrants had been encountered in the border area in the past two weeks. Some 2,000 of them were expelled to Haiti.
Images from the U.S. that appeared to show a border guard on horseback using his reins to contain Haitian migrants have also stirred anger in the Caribbean nation, with some protesters in Port-au-Prince stamping on the American flag near the U.S. Embassy.
Many of the Haitians arriving at the U.S. border had previously lived in Brazil and Chile, while others have transited through the South American countries.
They are escaping poverty in a country afflicted by earthquakes, corruption, and a presidential assassination.
