Latvian soldiers began building a barbed wire fence to protect the country's border with Belarus this week, the Latvian defence ministry said in a press release on Tuesday (September 28).
The materials for the fence, stretching for five kilometres (3.1 miles) were donated by the Slovenian government, the press release said.
Latvia's neighbours Poland and Lithuania have also deployed barbed wire fences at their borders with Belarus in recent months.
The three countries have seen a sharp increase in illegal crossings by migrants from Belarus over the summer. The defence ministry's press release did not refer to migrant crossings.
The EU have accused Belarus of encouraging migrants from Iraq, Afghanistan and African countries to cross the EU's external borders to put pressure on the bloc over sanctions Brussels has imposed on Minsk over rights abuses.
