- Story Text: Dozens of women pelted barricades protecting monuments in the middle of Mexico City on Tuesday (September 28) as they took part in a protest to commemorate the global day of action for access to safe and legal abortion.
Protesters marched to through Reforma Avenue towards the historic centre surrounded by police officers with shields and riot helmets. Authorities installed barricades around some major buildings and monuments that in the past have been intervened by demonstrators.
Mexican women chanted and waved their green scarfs demanding the depenalization of abortion in the whole country.
Currently only four states -Mexico City, Oaxaca, Veracruz and Hidalgo- allow full and legal access to abortion.
Shara, a young woman demonstrating at Mexico City, spoke to Reuters about this: "There are women who are raped, there are women who are put in jail for a spontaneous abortion (...). No one should dictate what we do with our body."
Earlier this month, Mexico's Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional to criminalize abortion and, shortly after, the government said that those jailed on accusations of having terminated their pregnancy would be freed.
