- Story Text: Bavaria's state premier and CSU leader Markus Soeder on Tuesday (September 28) offered his congratulations to election rival Olaf Scholz.
"It is important to respect an election outcome. And as far as I am concerned it is only proper to congratulate Olaf Scholz for getting the majority of votes in Germany because it hasn't happened very often so far. I explicitly would like to do that as the head of my party."
Scholz, finance minister in the outgoing government and chancellor candidate for the left-wing SPD, won Sunday's election.
The SPD, Germany's oldest party, won 25.7% of the vote, up five percentage points from the 2017 federal election, ahead of Merkel's CDU/CSU conservative bloc on 24.1%, provisional results showed. The Greens came in with 14.8% and the business friendly FDP won 11.5%.
