The crimes against Jewish people, which are documented here, are a perpetual reminder of the responsibility that we, the Germans, bear, and they show that Jewish life has again found a home in Germany, after the crimes against humanity that were the Shoah (the Holocaust), this is an immense expression of trust, for which we are grateful. This trust compels us to stand with determination against anti-Semitism, hatred, and violence every day. This is an obligation for every federal government." (SOUNDBITE) (Hebrew) ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER, NAFTALI BENNETT, SAYING: "The Holocaust is not the reason for the existence of the state of Israel. The connection of the Jewish people to its homeland didn't start in Auschwitz, but Auschwitz, our brothers, and sisters who were lost there strengthen our determination to never be a defenceless people, far away from its homeland." - Story Text: Outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged on Sunday (October 10) that her country would preserve its post-Holocaust commitment to Israel and stand against "anti-Semitism, hatred, and violence every day."
She made the statement during a visit to the Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem dedicated to the six million Jews killed by the Nazis during World World Two.
Merkel, making her eighth and final visit to Israel as she concludes her 16-year term, visited the memorial with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.
Germany has been a leading postwar European ally of Israel and Merkel has sought to cultivate security and economic ties, though she has differed with Israel on policies concerning the Palestinians and Iran.
