- Story Text: Jordan Spieth said on Tuesday (January 17) that was happy with his start to 2017 and was looking forward to competing for more major titles this year.
The 23 year-old was speaking at an Under Armour event in Tokyo just a couple of days after finishing third in the Sony Open in Hawaii.
Spieth, who is currently fifth in the world rankings said he was excited about what he could achieve this year.
"The Sony Open was great. It was a good finish in the last round," Spieth said while on stage where he was launching his new line of golf shoes, "Spieth One". "Yes, a great start to the year and excited for 2017. It's going to be a good year."
Spieth finished 19-under par at the Sony Open behind Justin Thomas and Justin Rose and the American admitted there was plenty of competition to win the major titles. Spieth won two tournaments in 2016 and hasn't won a major since the U.S. Open in 2015.
When asked whether Japan's Hideki Matsuyama would be one to watch in 2017, Spieth said there were plenty of players who would be challenging for the biggest honours.
"Very, very tough to beat (Japan's world number six, Hideki Matsuyama) this year," Spieth said. "Justin Thomas, another friend, who just won the last two tournaments, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson; a lot of really good players that are young players in the game of golf right now, it's very, very tough competition."
Since turning professional in 2012, Spieth has won 11 titles including two majors - the Masters and the U.S. Open. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
