- Story Text: Facebook is set to open a 'Start-up Garage' in Paris's Station F, purportedly the world's largest start-up campus founded by French telecommunication entrepreneur Xavier Niel.
Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg announced the partnership on Tuesday (January 17), highlighting the importance of entrepreneurship in the digital world.
"When we think about jobs, 60% of jobs that are created in France and in most countries around the world come from start-ups. At Facebook we have nothing we care about more than supporting them. There are a million businesses in France who are using Facebook every month," said Facebook's number-two executive.
Station F seeks to become a new harbor of start-ups in Europe and steal the "tech" label from London in light of Brexit, or Great Britain's departure from the European Union.
A sprawling lot branching out to co-working spaced, it will have more than 34,000 square meters in an ancient railway depot in Paris's 13th district.
Facebook will coach 10 to 15 start-ups specialising in data-mining for about six months.
"We are going to be supporting the start-ups who are in the 'Start-up Garage' by Facebook, supporting desks, giving them mentoring from Facebook, engineers and privacy experts, and running weekly workshops and classes for start-ups. And as much as we hope to help you with your businesses, my guess is that we are going to learn even more from working with you than you will from working with us," Sandberg said.
Station F, with a starting fund of 250 million Euros, was financed by Niel and it will open on April with a capacity for 1,000 start-ups. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
