NEWS CONFERENCE IN PROGRESS (SOUNDBITE) (English) DIRECTOR MARTIN SCORSESE SAYING: "I was thinking it would be interesting to do a modern-day story and deal with the cities in Taiwan, here of course in Taipei and I also like Taichung. It's very interesting as a city, very modern and yet also open, with a great deal of nature all around it. The look and the feel of the city and the people, it would be wonderful if I had a way of coming up with a story or some sort of idea for my interpretation of that, it's very difficult." - Story Text: Oscar winning director Martin Scorsese said on Friday (January 20) his added life experiences helped him to finish the script for his latest movie "Silence", which took more than 25 years to complete.
"During that time of trying to find a way to make this film, my changes in my own life, as I got older and experienced different things and relationships changed, becoming a father again at a late age, all of this seemed to work together with clarifying how to proceed to interpret this picture, until finally Jay and I were able to get it on the page in 2006," Scorsese told a press conference in Taipei.
The movie that stars Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver and Liam Neeson was entirely filmed in Taiwan, although its story takes place in Japan, following two western missionaries who are in search of their missing mentor. The movie was adapted from Shusaku Endo's novel of the same title.
After expressing gratitude to Taiwan and the Taiwanese film crew for bringing the movie to life, Scorsese said he was fascinated with the island and hoped he could come back to make another movie.
"I was thinking it would be interesting to do a modern-day story and deal with the cities in Taiwan, here of course in Taipei and I also like Taichung. It's very interesting as a city, very modern and yet also open, with a great deal of nature all around it. The look and the feel of the city and the people, it would be wonderful if I had a way of coming up with a story or some sort of idea for my interpretation of that, it's very difficult," he said, adding that this would require some research as he would not want to portray Taiwan from a foreigner's perspective.
The movie was co-written for the screen by Scorsese and Jay Cocks. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
