- Story Text:Activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) celebrated the coming Lunar New Year by providing a rescued chicken with a vegetarian feast on Thursday (January 19).
The chicken dined on an elegant feast which included a burger, pizza, vegan cake and fruits.
The 2-year-old abandoned chicken, Cherry, was rescued by Xiao Li, a 45-year-old animal activist and founder of Together for Animals China (TAC), on a street near her home a year ago.
"I have been saving cats and dogs for more than ten years, and I never saved a chicken before. I didn't have any idea of what to do, so I put it in a plastic bag and brought it home," said Xiao.
"After I brought it home, I found that its eyes were shut. I thought the reason why it was abandoned was because it was blind."
The chicken now is owned by a 6-year-old girl from Beijing.
Chen Jia, 33, an animal activist and Celebrity and Media Liaison Officer of PETA China, says that they chose to mark the chicken's second birthday this way to draw people's attention to vegetarianism and veganism.
"It is right before spring festival to tell people that look, the chickens are actually very cute too. They could have normal emotional communication with human being. There's no difference between us. They have their own group of networks and societies. They are the kind of animals like this," said Chen.
"When we are celebrating its birthday, we want to tell people that actually we have many choices on food. We can give ourselves a new start in the coming year and give a chance to those chicks."
The Chinese New Year of the rooster is coming in a week's time.
Despite the advocacy of going vegetarian or vegan, in many cities in southern China, people still keep traditional culture norms that chicken should be on the dinner table for new year's eve - in Chinese the word chicken sounds like 'luck and happiness'. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
