- Story Text: U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said farewell to the State Department on Thursday (January 19), a day before President-Elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office for the presidency.
Kerry told employees of the State Department that even though he was departing with sadness, he was excited for the next chapter.
"I am actually very optimistic about the future. I know that some of you accuse me of having blind optimism. No it's not blind. But I am optimistic. I am optimistic because this country has shown again and again how strong we are internally. How powerful we are. How incredibly resilient we are and how we have the ability to redefine our story. To write the next chapter. To go on to a stronger better place," Kerry said.
The speech to employees came hours after Kerry met with his likely successor Rex Tillerson. It was their first meeting since Trump named the former oil executive as his pick for the job, a senior State Department official said. - Copyright Holder: STATE DEPARTMENT TV
