- Title: Sundance festival opens with climate and politics
- Date: 20th January 2017
- Summary: PARK CITY, UTAH, UNITED STATES (JANUARY 19, 2017) (REUTERS) ***WARNING CONTAINS FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY*** (SOUNDBITE) (English) SENIOR EDITOR OF VULTURE.COM AND NEW YORK MAGAZINE, KEVIN LINCOLN, SAYING: "One thing that Sundance does really well is it gives a platform to young film makers and young film makers are often in touch with the zeitgeist and new technology and issues that are relevant to younger people in a way that older film makers are not and film makers that have become entrenched in the film industry have not. A lot of people this is their first film or their second film and so it's an opportunity for the industry to tap into that young talent in a way that it doesn't often get a chance to do." The pendulum swings, it swings back and forth, it always has and it probably always will so we don't occupy ourselves with politics so we try and stay away from politics per se and we stay focused on the stories being told by artist so that's our main drive." STAGE (SOUNDBITE) (English) SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL FOUNDER, ROBERT REDFORD, SAYING: "In this current dialogue, it looks like a lot of things are going to be taken away or tried to be taken away from us and I think what that's going to do is galvanize the people. I really have total faith in that. Those people that weren't interested like 'Who cares?' are going to realize they're going to be directly affected and they're going to step up and I hope and I think that it's going to be followed up by a movement and a movement is going to go against whatever choice is made to cut things away that affects people. The people are going to rebel against that." REDFORD AT PHOTOCALL FORMER U.S.S VICE PRESIDENT AL GORE AT OPENING NIGHT PREMIERE OF 'AN INCONVENIENT SEQUEL' (SOUNDBITE) (English) FORMER U.S. VICE PRESIDENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPAIGNER, AL GORE, SAYING: Reporter: "You've talked to him (Donald Trump). What would you say to people to put their minds at rest because you seemed to say that you had a good conversation with him?" "Well the only thing I'm going to say is that there was a little bit more openness to it. We don't know yet. We're going to find out soon enough what these policies are but one of the reasons I'm excited about this movie is that this now is a mass movement. The vast majority in this country and around the world are demanding solutions to the climate crisis and one of the things you'll see in this movie is that the solutions are now incredibly available and they're becoming cheaper than getting electricity by burning fossil fuels. People can make money by cutting the omissions of global warming pollution and that's really exciting." VARIOUS OF GORE BEING INTERVIEWED (SOUNDBITE) (English) FORMER U.S. VICE PRESIDENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPAIGNER, AL GORE, SAYING: Reporter: "What are your feelings about tomorrow? The inauguration - how are you feeling about everything?" "Well it's a historic event, every four years and we all hope for the best so we'll wait and see. Thank you."
