- Story Text:Migrants travelling in a caravan on the roads of southern Mexico held Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador responsible for the death of more than 50 migrants in a horrific accident following a truck carrying migrants flipped over on Thursday (December 9).
"His (of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador) objective is to dismantle this caravan, destroy it, beat it without any respect for all the marching families," Migrant Activist and Caravan Organizer Irineo Mujica told Reuters on Friday (December 10) as he recounted the anguish of their journeys on foot.
According to Mexican authorities, most of the 55 people killed and the dozens injured when a truck packed with migrants flipped over in southern Mexico on Thursday (December 9) were Guatemalans.
Migrants regretted the truck crash and asked Mexican authorities to allow them to continue their journey to reach the United States.
Reuters video showed migrants climbing up on trucks and cars while migration officers tried to hold them back.
Every year thousands of migrants from Central America and Haiti escape poverty and violence back home, searching for jobs and a better life but have complained of mistreatment in Mexico.
Since October, thousands of migrants have traveled on foot from the southern border to reach the United States or Mexico City.
