- Story Text: Two police personnel were killed and at least a dozen were injured in a militant attack on the outskirts of Indian Kashmir's main city of Srinagar on Monday (December 13), police said.
Militants opened fire on a police vehicle, injuring at least 14 personnel, two of whom succumbed to their injuries, Kashmir police said on Twitter. "All the injured personnel evacuated to hospital. Area cordoned off," Kashmir police said.
Earlier in the day, Indian security forces killed two militants during a gunfight in the city.
The gunbattle broke out after police cordoned the city's Rangret area following the information of the presence of militants there, as per media reports.
Claimed in full by both India and Pakistan but only controlled in parts by the neighbouring countries, Kashmir has been the site of a bloody insurrection against New Delhi since the 1990s.
India says Pakistan supports the militancy in Kashmir. Islamabad denies this, saying it only provides diplomatic and moral support to the Kashmiri people. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
