- Story Text: After uncertainty about Rio de Janeiro's famous New Year's Eve celebration, Copacabana bar owners are now looking forward to the event that attracts millions of residents and tourists.
Since this week, Rio's bars have announced events for the New Year celebration, despite the executive secretary of Health Ministry, Rodrigo Cruz, does not recommend holding celebrations at the end of the year and during Carnival due to the lack of information on the Omicron variant.
"We have good expectations by selling the tickets for the New Year's Eve Party. Although the governors' decisions have hurt us a lot," bar owner Marcos Gerbassi Ramos told Reuters on Tuesday (December 14).
Five days after cancelling the celebration due to the first cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant, Rio's Mayor Eduardo Paes announced the event was back on.
Spectators in Copacabana beach will enjoy a 16-minute show consisting on fireworks.
There will be a total of ten locations where residents and tourists will watch the show to avoid crowds.
The celebration attracts millions of residents and tourists to the world-famous Copacabana beach every year.
The South American country has registered 22,191,949 cases since the pandemic began. According to ministry data, the official death toll has risen to 616,878 in the world's second-deadliest outbreak outside the United States.
