- Story Text:Indonesia started administering COVID-19 vaccinations for children aged between 6-11 on Tuesday (December 14), as the Southeast Asian country becomes one of the first in the region to immunise the very young.
Health officials kick-started the latest vaccination programme by inoculating around 100 school children in an elementary school in Jakarta, handing out vaccination cards to those who had received their shots.
"It will hurt more if (I were) exposed to COVID-19 because the lungs would be damaged and infected," 11-year-old Muhammad Avisena said, after getting his first shot.
Indonesia approved China's Sinovac Biotech vaccine for the age group last month and about 26.5 million children have been targeted for vaccination, a senior health ministry official, told a briefing on Monday (December 13).
The Sinovac vaccine is the only shot approved for children in Indonesia and an official said from next year authorities would restrict its use only for this age group.
