- Story Text:About twenty people gathered outside the US embassy in the Ukrainian capital Kiev on Friday (January 20) to call on Donald Trump to continue supporting Ukraine.
The rally participants who timed the event to coincide with Trump's inauguration, held Ukrainian and US flags and posters reading "Trump, welcome to Ukraine" and "Trump - peace for Ukraine".
"We hold this rally here in order to congratulate the people of the United States, we are waiting for Trump to visit Kiev, we want peace and believe he can help us to reach peace in our country," said Maxim, the rally participant.
U.S. support for Ukraine has contributed to a deterioration in relations with Russia to their worst since the Cold War.
Under President Barack Obama, Washington has invested heavily in helping Kiev make a success of a 2013-2014 uprising which forced a Kremlin-backed leader to flee and installed the pro-Western opposition in power.
Republican Donald Trump, who will be inaugurated on Friday, has promised to thaw relations with Moscow and is widely expected to push to dismantle sanctions imposed in 2014 over Russia's annexation of Crimea and its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
