- Story Text: French presidential candidate Francois Fillon visited the memorial site of a recent Christmas market attack while in Berlin on Monday (January 23).
Fillon laid a white rose and took a moment of silence at the place where twelve people died after a truck ploughed into the market. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.
The conservative front-runner in France's presidential elections was in the German capital to attend a closed-door meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The former prime minister under ex-president Nicolas Sarkozy is the only candidate to be received by chancellor so far, in a sign of support from Merkel.
Polls put Fillon in the lead to win a run-off vote in in the April-May election, though his lead over far right leader Marine Le Pen and independent centrist Emmanuel Macron has been narrowing. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
